VASECTOMY

A VASECTOMY is a simple, safe surgical procedure for the permanent sterilization of a man.  The vas which is a tube that leads from the testicle is cut and sealed to prevent sperm from leaving.  The procedure interrupts the delivery of sperm leaving sexual drive and potency unaffected.  A vasectomy is performed in the urologist’s office, but can be performed in an ambulatory or hospital setting if a patient prefers be sedated intravenously.

In a conventional vasectomy, the urologist makes one or two small cuts in the scrotum to access the vas.  A small piece of the vas deferens is removed.  The procedure is then repeated on the other side.

Alternatively, a no-scalpel vasectomy technique is performed through one single puncture of the scrotum and requires no sutures or stitches.  A no scalpel vasectomy is a less traumatic way for the urologist to control the vas which results in less pain and fewer postoperative complications.  The actual interruption of sperm delivery is identical in both techniques.

After the procedure, the patient is advised to place an ice pack on the scrotum to minimize swelling and discomfort.  Most patients will be fully recovered in one week.  Some patients are able to return to work as early as one day after the procedure.

It is important to understand that a vasectomy is not immediately effective for preventing pregnancy.  The patient will need to submit a semen analysis to demonstrate that no sperm are seen in the semen.  It is recommended that patients wait three months or 20 ejaculates for the sperm to clear.  Until the semen analysis confirms there are no sperm present, patients should be aware that the vasectomy is not effective in preventing pregnancy.
