KIDNEY DISEASE

The most common form of cancer to develop in the kidneys is called renal cell carcinoma.  It accounts for more than 90 percent of all kidney tumors.  There are many risk factors that may increase the development of kidney cancer including:

  • Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Family history of kidney cancer
  • Diet with high caloric intake
  • Obesity

Unfortunately, most kidney tumors produce no symptoms at all and are therefore difficult to catch early.  They may be detected incidentally when evaluation for an unrelated problem arises.  Although there are no blood or urine tests that detect the presence of kidney tumors, imaging studies like ultrasounds and CT scans are useful in detecting these tumors.

There are three main treatment options for a tumor that is confined to the kidney, including:

  • Nephrectomy - A procedure to remove the tumor from the kidney.  This is accomplished either by a partial nephrectomy, which is removal of the whole tumor while preserving as much normal kidney tissue as possible or a radical nephrectomy, which is the removal of the whole kidney.
  • Tumor ablation - This allows for the destruction of the tumor without surgically removing it.  Cryotherapy, high-intensity ultrasound, and microwave therapy are a few methods used to accomplish ablation.
  • Surveillance - This is appropriate when a patient cannot tolerate the other treatment options or has a short life expectancy.
