BLADDER CANCER

BLADDER CANCER is a type of cancer that begins in the bladder, the balloon-shaped organ that stores urine.  It is the sixth most common cancer in the United States.  Although the development and progression of bladder cancer is only partially understood, it is known that a number of substances may cause this cancer to develop.  Cigarette smoking is estimated to cause 50 percent of all bladder cancer cases, and work-place exposure to chemical compounds such as paints and solvents are estimated to cause another 25 percent of cases.

90 percent of bladder cancers originate in the inner lining of the bladder, known as the urothelium.  Hematuria, or blood in the urine, is the most common symptom of bladder cancer.  The blood may be visible in urine;  however, in most cases the blood is invisible and can only be seen under the microscope.  Blood in the urine is a potential warning sign of cancer and should be addressed.  Other symptoms of bladder cancer include frequent urination or painful urination.

The urologist will utilize diagnostic tools, such as urinalysis, which can be analyzed for cancer cells and cystoscopy, a procedure that allows viewing of the bladder interior.  Cystoscopy can typically be performed in the office.

The most common treatment for bladder cancer is transurethral resection of the bladder (TURBT).  The major advantage of TURBT is the ability to provide suitable tissue to the pathologist for determining the tumor’s grade and stage.  Following removal of a bladder tumor, chemotherapy administered within the bladder, known as intravesical chemotherapy, or administration of antibodies into the bladder, known as intravesical immunotherapy, may be used to prevent tumor recurrence.
