ADVANCED PROSTATE CANCER

When prostate cancer spreads outside the prostate, to other tissues and often to lymph nodes, bones, liver or lungs it is referred to as “Advanced Prostate Cancer”. Men with advanced prostate cancer may or may not have symptoms and they depend on the size of new growth and where the cancer has spread. With advanced disease, there may be problems urinating or blood in the urine. Some men may feel tired, weak or lose weight and there may be lower back or hip pain.                             Advanced Prostate Cancer Patient Guide

DEFINITIONS

  • Metastatic prostate cancer is when the cancer has spread to the bone, lungs, liver, brain, lymph nodes outside the pelvis
  • Castrate resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is when the PSA has risen or the cancer shows signs of growing after using hormone therapy
  • Metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is when the PSA is rising on hormone therapy and the cancer has spread far from the prostate. There are treats available to men with mCRPC.
  • Biochemical recurrence is when the PSA rises after treatment but there are no signs of cancer.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

  • PROVENGE Immunotherapy Treatment:

PROVENGE is a life extending treatment that is used in some men with advanced prostate cancer. It is an immunotherapy that takes your own cells and reprograms them to attack the cancer.

  • XOFIGO (zo-FEEG-oh) Therapy Treatment:

XOFIGO helps extend life. It goes to the bone, giving off strong energy that kills cancer cells, but does limited damage to nearby healthy cells. It is an injection used to treat prostate cancer that is resistant to medical or surgical treatments. XOFIGO lowers testosterone that has spread to your bones with symptoms, but not to other parts of your body. (The medical term for this condition is metastatic castration resistant cancer, or mCRPC).
